Starting centuries ago with clay powder, the concept of dry shampoo has been around for a while. Nowadays, there are countless dry shampoo options, including spray, tinted, and DIY (to name a few).

Basically, dry shampoo is any substance applied to the scalp or hair to rid you of oil, debris, and odor without using water.

When Was It First Used?

Worldwide, the first historical reference of dry shampoo was around the late 15th century when people in Asia were using clay powder in their hair.

In the United States, the first historical reference of dry shampoo was during the late 1700s and early 1800s when ground starches were used to color and deodorize the wigs of our forefathers.

When Did It Gain Public Awareness?

The public really wasn't aware of dry shampoo until the American Journal of Pharmacy described its concept and use all the way back in 1918.

When Was It First Produced?

What Made It So Popular Then?

From the 1940s through the 1970s, the high demand for dry shampoo was due to busy homemakers desperate for a quick and easy way to clean their hair. One of the first true ads for dry shampoo featured international model Lesley "Twiggy" Larson, which helped increase demand and make dry shampoo part of mainstream culture in the late 1960s.

Why Is It So Popular Now?

Dry shampoo has experienced another boom recently, with people jumping on the bandwagon for any number of reasons, including convenience (saving time) and conservation (saving water), and preservation (saving hair from color/nutrient loss).
