Celebrating The Season Of Giving Back on Skid Row

Tis the season of holiday parties, whimsical decorations and gift exchanges. However, for some this season isn’t quite so merry. Fortunately, there are organizations and individuals dedicated to helping those less fortunate during this season and year round. It is for those people that a group of Costa Mesa TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy students went out to Skid Row to donate their time and skills last month.

Our cosmetology school students participated in the Union Rescue Mission Skid Row Project where they gave over 150 haircuts for the homeless and people living in shelters in Los Angeles. The event served about 2,300 people through free haircuts from volunteers throughout the industry as well as donating clothes and food to those who attended.

Union Rescue Mission (URM) is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization located in the heart of Skid Row. URM is one of the largest rescue missions of its kind in the United States and the oldest in Los Angeles, established in 1891. Through their organization, Union Rescue Mission provides a safe place for men, women and children where they can access basic needs including meals, shelter and medical care as well as counseling, spiritual resources and academic and professional training and classes.

Partnering with URM was not only important to benefit those in need, but it was also an extremely rewarding experience for the academy students and staff who took part in the event. It was a great way for them to give back to the community by using their particular talents and truly make each person they served look good and feel good.

“The students felt great to be able to come together as a team and help those in need to feel better about themselves,” said Regional Academy Director for the West Coast, Rachel Brumbaugh. “We were glad to be able to be part of such an impactful event and contribute to the community in a positive way.”

It is experiences like these that give students a firsthand look at the impact they can make through their future career as a hairdresser or beauty professional. As a company, we believe in giving back to our communities through the services and abilities we have to offer. It is something we strive to instill in each student throughout their cosmetology program at TONI&GUY.

“This was a great example of the opportunity we have in the hairdressing industry to make a huge difference in someone’s life, and is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do,” added Brumbaugh.

As our students graduate and start their careers in the industry, we hope that experiences like this one stay with them and inspire them to continue giving back to their communities and utilizing their talents to help those in need long after they leave the academy.

“We are so glad our students had the chance to experience this and [we hope they] continue to participate in these positive outreach events throughout their careers,” said Brumbaugh.
